NDC showcases marine science at Tall Ships Races Aberdeen

NDC researchers, students and colleagues from the University of Aberdeen took part in the Tall Ships Races Aberdeen, engaging hundreds of members of the public, off all ages, across a weekend of science outreach and public engagement.

Visitors had the opportunity to meet the team at the Discovery Zone in the Castlegate and at Greyhope Bay.

Dr Alethea Madgett and PhD student Megan Squire ran an interactive marine science exhibit featuring a virtual reality experience using a VR headset showing some 3D models of common species from the North Sea including the cold water coral Pophelia pertusa.

Dr Rebecca von Hellfeld and Dr Christoph Gade, who completed a PhD with the NDC, were at the Discovery Zone and Greyhope Bay showcasing marine mammal research including teaching the public how to identify a dolphin and showing real tissue samples.
