The National Decommissioning Centre’s Port Sim Digital Toolbox for Port Operations has been selected to receive funding through the Aberdeen City Region Deal Digital Challenge Fund.
Led by Simulator Academic Lead Dr Marcin Kapitaniak, Port Sim is one of several successful initiatives sharing £3.1 million in funding.
The project will use the NDC’s advanced marine simulator to develop a digital toolbox for modelling ports and port operations.
Researchers will model six strategically important ports to help understand local port infrastructure requirements for offshore renewable energy technologies and inform future planning and development.
The 18-month project will build on previous port-modelling research undertaken at the NDC with support from the Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub, providing a strong foundation for the development of the new digital toolbox and its application to future offshore renewable energy projects.
The Digital Challenge Fund supports the Aberdeen City Region Deal’s broader mission to accelerate sustainable economic growth, nurture new industries and strengthen the region’s standing as a hub of digital excellence.

| Notes for Editors | The Aberdeen City Region Deal is a partnership between Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, Opportunity North East, Scottish Government and UK Government. The Deal is one delivery mechanism for the regional economic strategy and is investing in sector innovation projects and infrastructure to support economic diversification and resilience. Signed in November 2016, both Governments committed to jointly investing up to £250 million over a 10-year period. These commitments form part of an overarching £826 million funding package for the Aberdeen City Region Deal. In tandem with the Deal itself, further investment is being made over the same timeframe through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both councils and the Scottish Government. Under the MoU, the Scottish Government is committing an additional £254 million to realise a range of projects spanning transport, housing and digital themes. Within this £254 million, a total of £10 million is specifically supporting initiatives to extend and enhance digital infrastructure in the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire areas. This stands over and above commitments made through the main Deal. |
