A new review paper from the NDC’s Dr Alethea Madgett and colleagues has been cited in the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) habitat retention report, a practical guide intended to assist decommissioning decision makers on the design and implementation of a program to retain the valuable habitat afforded by infrastructure through reefing options.

Offshore oil and gas platforms and similar structures emerge as localised biodiversity hotspots, although their broader ecological significance remains a topic of debate.

In the paper, published in PLOS Sustainability and Transformation, a comprehensive overview of oil and gas platform ecology spanning various organismal groups and geographic regions is given.

This synthesis aims to illuminate the ecological dynamics at play, providing crucial insights into the potential management of decommissioning processes as these structures approach the end of their operational lifespan.
