Congratulations to our research fellow Alethea Madgett on her recent publication presenting important findings from an ecological study of a commercially important fish species and the influence of offshore oil and gas structures on its behaviours and reproduction and the necessity for evidence based management strategies for decommissioning and/or late-life management.

Climate Strategies North Sea Workshop Delegates visit NDC
Representatives from academia, industry, and civil society participating in the North Sea Climate Strategies workshop visited the NDC on 20th September 2022. The visit provided a great opportunity to showcase how our research expertise and technology is contributing to projects in renewables and decarbonising decommissioning activities and was a fitting end to the workshop.

The partnership will seek to draw on current research taking place at the NDC and the University of Aberdeen to deliver a programme of research that will provide benefit to both the nuclear and offshore energy sectors.

Fully Funded PhD Projects in Floating Wind working with ORE Catapult and National Decommissioning Centre
Three PhD projects co-funded by ORE Catapult, the NDC and the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen are currently advertised on FindAPhD with a closing date of 12th September for applications. Dr Marcin Kapitaniak and Professor Richard Neilson from the University of Aberdeen are coordinating the projects at the NDC in Newburgh.

The NDC hosted their first industry session on 28th July 2022 on offshore technology and policy for the energy transition.

NDA Digital Fluidity Workshop
The NDC hosted the NDA’s Cross-Industry workshop connecting people from different companies across different industries to share good practices on decommissioning. The digital fluidity challenge exists across multiple sectors. Net Zero and decommissioning opportunities are driving an ongoing requirement for clarity and competence in digital skills.

CNR International Decommissioning Team and Engineering Development visit NDC
The NDC hosted CNR International on 27th June when there were good discussions, a tour of the NDC premises and a demonstration of the capabilities of our simulator.

National Decommissioning Centre and ORE Catapult form floating offshore wind research partnership
The research partnership with NDC and ORE Catapult initially consists of three PhD projects, each focusing on a different aspect of offshore wind development, including the simulation of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) systems, design optimisation of these systems, and environmental concerns.

£2m project to build world-leading decommissioning test facility
The Barrier Qualification Chamber project aims to provide a system which mimics high temperature & high pressure environment, gives repeatable and consistent testing conditions to allow qualification of different barrier methods, and gives operators and the regulators confidence that a proposed novel barrier solution will work.
